critters of texas

so i’ve seen a few critters since i moved to texas. they seem to be everywhere in this raging, humid heat. and most of them? they’re big, scary and quite possibly deadly. but whatever, i have yet to find anything bigger and scarier than i am. thus, ’tis all good.

the first creature i came across was in the backyard. a tiny anole (i think…i skipped herpatology (nobody wants herpes!)).

harmless enough. and its a good thing as there are dozens of those little buggers climbing all over my truck as i type.

i’ve been doing a lot of hiking and camping down here, so i’ve seen a few things in the woods. there’s an arboretum not too far from here and on a hike there i came across some flavor of snake. i have no clue what it is, but i figured it would be good to have a picture of it so that they could figure out what killed me by the last image on my camera.

on another hike, this time at huntsville state park (land of the electric chair), i ran into some real luck. i found grasshoppers so big i could acutally saddle them up and ride them home. easy enough since there’s a saddle on every split-rail fence in texas.

seriously, that thing is the size of a brawurst. no lie. frickin’ huge.

back at the arboretum, near where i saw the snake, i saw a gaggle of turtles. but the water was so murky it was hard to get any good shots. this was the best that i could do.

and finally, i have to go back to the big one: the gator. remember when i said that there wasn’t anything here that was bigger and scarier than i am? i lied. this thing could easily have taken a bite out of yours truly while i was taking the picture in the previous post. it was less than 30 feet away and if it hadn’t been a trillion degrees in the shade, he’d of had me. so here’s one more of the one that let me get away.

that’s all for now. as i find more critters, and i will, i’ll post ’em. i’m still hunting for one of these:
